Proto-Kaw To Perform at Kansas City’s
2006 Blues & Jazz Festival |

Kansas City,
KS : Musician Kerry Livgren, guitarist and co-founder of the 1970’s band,
Kansas, has returned to the music scene with his new band, Proto-Kaw, a progressive
rock/jazz sensation. Livgren and Proto-Kaw are one of several groups featured at the 2006
Blues & Jazz Festival at The Woodlands, Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 2-3.
Proto-Kaw, (proto=early version of) ( kaw=indian word for Kansas), features the talents
of fellow band members Lynn Meredith, sax player John Bolton, drummer Mike Patrum,
keyboardist Dan Wright, multi- instrumentalist/vocalist Jake Livgren and bass player Craig
Kew. The group has come full circle in their music careers in recent years and again is
playing live concerts and recording. In January, Proto-Kaw released its newest CD, titled
"The Wait of Glory," which features 12 new original songs from Kerry Livgren.
The new CD comes on the heels of their critically acclaimed breakout CD "Before
Became After." Proto Kaw was an experiment in renewing old relationships that has
turned into one of the world's greatest new rock bands.
 In the early 70's, the band Kansas went
through three transformations. The sound of the band changed along with the group members.
The band the world came to know as Kansas was actually the third version of the band.
Proto-Kaw is the renamed, reformed second version. Formed in 1971 and disbanding in
1973, "Kansas II" played mostly original material written by Kerry Livgren.
After Kansas II disbanded, the group went their separate ways with Kerry gaining notoriety
with the famous Kansas and the others assuming normal lives working in education, sales
and the media. Most did not speak with each other for 30 years and many did not play music
during this span, until the resurrection of the band through this project. That is what
makes this story so unique -- that Proto-Kaw lives again!
Fans of the group can enjoy their new transformation on Saturday, Sept. 2. For $17.50
per person, Blues & Jazz Fest attendees will also see the guitar legend Bo Diddley,
The Latin Jazz All Stars, The Moutin Reunion direct from Paris as well as Kansas City's
biggest names like Baby Lee & The KC All Stars.
The Woodlands features a covered grandstand, free parking and close proximity to the
Legends, Kansas City’s hottest new entertainment district.
Doors will open at 11 a.m. with opening acts getting underway at noon. The show will go
on throughout the day and evening, until the last of the entertainers takes their final
bow. Children under age 12 will be admitted for free; tickets can be obtained through
TicketMaster at 816-931-3330.
